Cartier saw the Gulf of Saint Lawrence for the first time. He named the area "The Country of Canadas." This name came from Iroquoian words for local settlements. He also planted a large cross to claim the land for France.

Cartier went on a second voyage in 1535. He traveled with three ships and 110 men.

He sailed up the Saint Lawrence River to reach Stadacona. Later, he reached a large village called Hochelaga. The winter of 1535 was very difficult for the crew. The river froze with ice over 1.8 meters thick. Many men became very sick with a disease called scurvy.

Cartier worked with a leader named Jean-François de La Rocque de Roberval. They built a fortified place called Charlesbourg-Royal. The settlers planted gardens with cabbage, turnips, and lettuce. They also tried to collect shiny minerals. Cartier thought he found real gold and diamonds. However, the stones were actually just quartz and iron pyrites. This mistake led to a famous French saying about things being false.

Cartier's travels changed how Europeans saw North America. He was the first to map the Saint Lawrence River. His work helped people understand the geography of the region. Even though his maps are lost, his letters tell his story. Many years later, people built monuments to remember him.
