It comes from plants in the genus Panax. This group includes Korean ginseng, American ginseng, and South China ginseng. These plants are known for having special parts called ginsenosides. People have used these roots in traditional medicine for many centuries. However, scientists have not found clear proof that they treat diseases.

Some people use ginseng as a dietary supplement. It is important to be careful with these products. Sometimes, makers add other ingredients that are not listed on the label. Using too much ginseng might also cause bad reactions with other medicines.

There are different ways to prepare the ginseng root.

Fresh ginseng is also called green ginseng. This is the raw root that has not been dried. White ginseng is made by peeling the root and drying it. If it is dried in the sun, it turns a yellowish-white color. Red ginseng is made by steaming the root at boiling temperatures. After steaming, the root is dried again. This process gives the ginseng a reddish color. Red ginseng stays fresh longer than white ginseng does.

People have studied ginseng for a very long time.

One of the first books about it was written in China in 196 AD. Later, in 1596, a man named Li Shizhen wrote about it too. He called the plant a "superior tonic." This means it was used to help people who were recovering from being sick. In the 16th century, people even fought over control of ginseng fields. In China, old folk tales say ginseng can turn into children. These stories say a ginseng child might vanish if you tie a red ribbon to them.

Today, ginseng is a very large business.

In 2013, global sales were more than $2 billion. China is the largest buyer of ginseng in the world. Most of the world's ginseng comes from just four countries. China produces 44,749 tons of it. South Korea produces 27,480 tons. Canada grows 6,486 tons, and the United States grows 1,054 tons. Wild ginseng is very rare and is now endangered. This is because people harvest it faster than it can grow back.

You can find ginseng in many different foods.

In Korea, it is used in soups and side dishes. People also make tea or special drinks with it. You can even find it in energy drinks. Some people use the leaves in Asian soups with chicken or pork. It is also used as a flavoring for pets like dogs and cats. While many people enjoy it, scientists say we still need more research. They want to know more about how it affects the human body.
