Humans have lived in this area for a very long time. Early humans stayed in places like Darband Cave. This cave is in a deep canyon near the Siah Varud. Archaeologists found stone tools and animal fossils there. These items date back to the Lower Paleolithic period. Another site called Yarshalman was used by Neanderthals. They likely lived there between 40,000 and 70,000 years ago.

History shows that many different groups have moved through Gilan. The Gelae people entered the region long ago. Later, the Ziyarid and Buyid dynasties began here in the mid-10th century. The Buyid king Mu'izz al-Dawla even conquered Baghdad in 945. In the 9th century, the Rus' people made raids on the coast. They traveled as merchants and sometimes used 500 ships for raids. These raids happened between the years 864 and 1041. The province has seen many changes in who rules the land.

For a long time, Gilan was a poor province. People mostly traded wood and smoked fish. This changed in the late Middle Ages with silk. People began using silk worms to make beautiful fabric. This made Gilan one of the wealthiest places in Iran. It was a major exporter of silk in Asia. The silk trade was a very important way to make money.

However, a sickness among the silk worms later hurt the economy.

To help the economy, people changed what they grew. They began to plant more tea and rice.
