This area is in the hills of central Afghanistan. The Ghurids were of Tajik origin. They spoke a Persian dialect. They also loved Persian art and poetry.

For a long time, they served other rulers. They were vassals to the Ghaznavids and the Seljuks. This means they had to obey those leaders. But the Ghurids wanted to rule themselves. They grew stronger as other empires faded away.

A leader named Ala al-Din Husayn fought for his power. He even took the city of Ghazni. Later, two brothers ruled together as a team. One was Ghiyath al-Din Muhammad. The other was Muhammad of Ghor.

Under them, the empire grew very large. It reached from eastern Iran to parts of India.

But the empire did not last. Ghiyath al-Din died from an illness in 1203. Muhammad of Ghor was killed in 1206. Soon, the Ghurid rule ended. Their lands were taken by the Khwarazmian Empire.
