The dynasty originated from the rugged Ghor region in the central mountains of modern-day Afghanistan. While some 19th-century scholars thought the Ghurids were Pashtun, modern scholars identify them as being of eastern Iranian Tajik origin. They were culturally Persianate, meaning they embraced Persian language and traditions. They were great patrons of Persian literature and poetry. This cultural focus helped them build sophisticated royal courts that influenced the region for centuries.\n\nThe Ghurids began as local chiefs in the hills of Ghor. For about 150 years, they functioned as vassals to larger powers. They served the Ghaznavid Empire and the Seljuk Empire. This meant they had to obey and pay tribute to these stronger rulers. Their path to independence began when they converted to Sunni Islam. This happened after the Ghaznavid ruler Mahmud of Ghazni conquered Ghor in 1011. Over time, the Ghurids grew more confident in their own strength.\n\nAs the 12th century progressed, a power vacuum emerged in eastern Afghanistan and the Punjab. One significant leader was Ala al-Din Husayn, who ruled from 1149 to 1161. He ended the Ghurid subordination to the Ghaznavids by sacking their capital. His actions were so intense that he earned the title Jahānsūz, which means \"the world burner.\"

\n\nFollowing Ala al-Din, the dynasty moved toward its imperial peak. The Ghurids established their capital at Firuzkuh. They also used cities like Herat and Ghazni as major power bases.

The empire reached its greatest territorial extent during a unique period of shared rule. This was a dyarchy, where two leaders worked together. The brothers Ghiyath al-Din Muhammad and Muhammad of Ghor divided the respons
