Ghost crabs are interesting creatures that live on sandy shores. They belong to a group called Ocypodinae. The name comes from Greek words meaning "swift foot."

These crabs live in warm, tropical areas around the world. They spend much of their time in deep burrows. These holes have a long shaft and a room at the end. They are semi-terrestrial, which means they live partly on land. They breathe oxygen from the air using gills. To breathe, they must keep their gills wet with seawater. They do this by using moist sand or the ocean surf.

These crabs have many special ways to survive. They have a box-like body and long eyestalks. Their eyes have large parts called corneas on the bottom. Most ghost crabs are pale to match the sand. They can change their color to match their environment. This is called morphological color change. It happens over a long time rather than quickly. Some young crabs even change color based on the time of day. They are lightest at midday and darkest at night.

This helps them stay hidden from danger. They are very fast runners that dart away from threats.

Scientists have studied these crabs to learn how they are related. They use special body parts called gonopods to tell species apart. In 2013, researchers Katsushi Sakai and Michael Türkay changed how we group them. They moved the gulf ghost crab into a new group called Hoplocypode. This was because its gonopods were different from the others. Before this, scientists thought there was only one group of these crabs. Now we know there are 22 different species. They belong to two different genera, or groups.

Ghost crabs use many sounds to communicate with each other. They can strike the ground with their claws. They also rub their claws together to make a rasping noise. Some even make a bubbly noise by rubbing their legs. They can even make a growling sound from their stomachs. This happens when teeth inside their stomachs rub together.

They are also generalist scavengers and predators. They eat small animals like clams and other crabs. They are known to eat sea turtle eggs and hatchlings. This makes them a major cause of death for sea turtles.

Understanding ghost crabs helps us look after our beaches. They live in the intertidal zone where the ocean meets the land. Humans can hurt their homes by walking on the sand. Building seawalls or leaving trash can also cause problems. Because their burrows are easy to find, they are great indicators. This means they show us how healthy a beach habitat is. If the crabs are doing well, the beach is likely healthy. We can learn a lot about the ocean by watching them.
