Gerard Damiano was a significant American director within the adult film industry.

He is considered a seminal figure of the Golden Age of Porn. This specific era of filmmaking lasted from 1969 until 1984. Damiano directed more than 50 adult films throughout his professional career. His work helped launch the modern adult-entertainment industry through high-profile releases. He was known for his ability to create commercially successful projects.

Damiano's early life in the Bronx, New York City, involved many different jobs.

Born Gerardo Rocco Damiano to an Italian American Catholic family, he faced early loss. His father died when he was only six years old. As a young boy, he worked as a shoeshine boy in Times Square. He also worked in an automat to earn money. At age 17, he enlisted in the United States Navy for four years. After his service, he used the G.I. Bill to study X-ray technology. He later worked as an X-ray technician at Jamaica Hospital in Queens.

His transition into filmmaking was driven by observations made in a small business.

Damiano opened a hairdressing salon with a friend in New York City. While working there, he frequently overheard sexual gossip from his customers. This led him to believe that films made to appeal to couples could be a commercial success. His actual entry into film began through an acquaintance. An accountant introduced him to a producer making low-budget horror films. Damiano began helping on those sets and eventually worked as a crew member on various New York sexploitation films in the late 1960s.

Damiano achieved massive commercial success with several specific films.

His 1972 film, Deep Throat, starred Linda Lovelace and Harry Reems. This film is regarded as a pioneering work in the industry. Interestingly, the film was financed by organized crime. Because of this, Damiano did not personally benefit from the film's large profits. Despite this, the film was a massive hit. It appeared on the Variety list of top-grossing pictures for two consecutive years. In 1972, it ranked at number 11 on that list.

Other films directed by Damiano also reached high levels of popularity.

In 1973, he directed The Devil in Miss Jones. This film earned $7.7 million in box office receipts for that year. This high amount placed it at number 7 on Variety's list of top-grossing pictures. It performed near major mainstream films like the James Bond movie, Live and Let Die. In 1975, a distributor named Inish Kae even ran an ad campaign for the film Memories Within Miss Aggie. These ads suggested the film deserved Academy Award nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress.

Damiano maintained a complex professional identity during his career. He often appeared in his own films in small, non-sexual side roles. He also used several different names for his work. He used the names Albert Gork and Al Gork. He also worked under the name Jerry Gerard, which he used to produce and direct Deep Throat. Another name he utilized was D. Furred. His career included many other titles such as Odyssey, The Story of Joanna, and Skinflicks.

In his personal life, Damiano was married three times. He had two children, Christar and Gerard, Jr., with his second wife, Barbara Walton. He also had a relationship with Annie Sprinkle, who was known as Ellen F Steinberg at the time. She met him after appearing as a witness in court regarding the film Deep Throat. Damiano died on October 25, 2008, at the age of 80. He passed away in a Fort Myers, Florida hospital following complications from a stroke. In 2011, he was posthumously honored with an XBIZ Award for Lifetime Achievement in Movie Production.
