Political power shifted during these years. King George I came from Hanover. He spoke limited English. He also showed little interest in daily British affairs. This created a political vacuum in the government. Robert Walpole filled this gap. He became Britain's first de facto Prime Minister. He used a system called cabinet governance. This helped the rise of modern parliamentary democracy.

The economy experienced massive changes. The British economy tripled in size during the 18th century. However, growth was only 12% between 1720 and 1740. A financial event called the South Sea Bubble occurred in 1720. This scandal ruined many investors. Even the king lost a heavy amount of money. This event led to better financial regulation later. Trade and commerce expanded through new financial innovations.

Society underwent intense transformations. The Industrial Revolution intensified class divisions. Many people moved from rural areas to cities. This process is known as urbanization. The Agricultural Revolution also changed rural life. It caused the decline of small farming communities. As work became scarce, many people emigrated. They moved to Canada and other parts of the British Empire.

Religion played a major role in social reform. The evangelical movement grew within the Church of England. John Wesley was a key figure in this movement. He preached 52,000 times to followers. He wanted people to have a personal relationship with Christ. His followers eventually formed the Methodist Church. Other leaders like William Wilberforce used faith for political action. They fought to abolish slavery and stop cruelty to animals.

Legal rights were a major struggle for many. Roman Catholics in Britain and Ireland faced many restrictions. They could not vote or hold government offices. This was due to laws like the Test Acts. In Ireland, Catholics made up about 90% of the population. They felt betrayed by previous political promises. Daniel O'Connell led a campaign for Catholic emancipation. He founded the Catholic Association in 1823.

O'Connell created a massive political crisis. He won a by-election in County Clare in 1828. He could not legally take his seat because he was Catholic. This victory showed immense support for his cause. Leaders feared a civil war might break out. The Duke of Wellington and Robert Peel eventually changed their minds. They helped pass the Roman Catholic Relief Act in 1829. This act finally allowed Catholics to vote and hold office.
