Whitefield loved acting in plays. He used this skill to tell Bible stories. His preaching was very dramatic. He spoke to huge crowds of people. Some groups had eighty thousand listeners! He traveled a long way on horseback. He went from New York to South Carolina. This was a very long trip.

Whitefield helped start a group called Methodism. He also built a home for orphans in Georgia. He called it Bethesda. He wanted it to be a place of mercy.

However, Whitefield was also a slaveholder. He owned more than 70 slaves. He believed their work helped pay for the orphanage. He even argued that slavery should be legal in Georgia. He thought it would help the colony grow. This part of his life is a serious part of his history.
