Jonathan Wild was a famous man in London long ago. He lived in the early 1700s. At that time, London had no real police force. People were very worried about crime. Wild told everyone he was a hero. He called himself the "Thief-Taker General." He said he helped find stolen goods.

But Wild had a dark secret. He was actually a leader of a large crime gang. He would have his men steal things. Then, he would find the items. He would return them to the owners for a reward. This was a way to make a lot of money. He even used his power to hurt other crime leaders. He wanted to be the only boss in the city.

Wild was very clever at tricking people. He even helped the government study crime. He told them to pay more money for catching thieves. This helped him get even richer.
