He was a professional wrestler, a writer, and a thinker about sports. Many people call him the first world heavyweight wrestling champion. He was very special because he always played fair. In his time, many wrestlers used fixed matches to win. This means they decided the winner before the fight started. Hackenschmidt was the only champion known to avoid these dishonest matches.

Because of his great strength, people called him "The Russian Lion."

George used his body in amazing ways to show his power. He was famous for being both very strong and very flexible. He could lift a small horse off the ground with ease. He could also lift 276 pounds using only one hand. In a move called a wrestler's bridge, he could lift a 335-pound barbell. He would do this while balancing on his neck.

He is even credited with helping to create the bench press. He also made the bear hug and the hack squat famous. These moves are still used by athletes today.

His journey began in Estonia, where he was born in 1877.

As a young boy, he spent a lot of time in the gym. He practiced many sports like swimming, cycling, and gymnastics. After finishing school in 1895, he worked as a blacksmith's apprentice. His life changed in 1898 when a doctor saw his strength. The doctor invited him to Saint Petersburg to train as a professional. Even though his parents were worried, he went to pursue his dream. He soon won the title of Russian champion.

George traveled all over the world to compete in big events.

He won that match and became the first world heavyweight champion.

George was much more than just a powerful athlete. He was a very cultured and smart man. He could speak seven different languages fluently. He spent his later years writing books about training and philosophy. Even the President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, admired him. Roosevelt said he would want to be George if he were not president.
