Sir George Grove was a man with many great interests.

He was born in Clapham in 1820. His father worked as a fishmonger and a venison dealer. Even though Grove was a trained civil engineer, he had a deep love for music. He worked on big projects like the Britannia Bridge. He also helped build cast-iron lighthouses in the West Indies. These jobs were hard, but they allowed him to explore the world. He eventually moved into musical work because he wanted to share the beauty of sound with others.

Grove spent many years working at the Crystal Palace in London.

This was a huge building used for arts and learning. As the secretary, he helped grow a small wind band into a full symphony orchestra. He worked closely with a musical director named August Manns. Grove wrote special notes for the concert programs. He did not use difficult musical words or jargon. Instead, he wrote to help regular people understand the music. He wanted every listener to feel the same charm that he felt.

One of his most exciting adventures was a search for lost music. In 1867, Grove and his friend Arthur Sullivan traveled to Vienna. They wanted to find music by a composer named Franz Schubert. At that time, many people in England did not listen to Schubert much. While searching, they found a bundle of music books in a dusty cupboard.

These books contained the music for a piece called Rosamunde. They also found several of Schubert's symphonies. This discovery helped make Schubert's music popular once again.

Grove is most famous for creating a massive musical book. He noticed that there were not enough books about music for non-professionals. He decided to make his own dictionary to fill this gap.

It is known as Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians. He worked with a publisher called Macmillan and Co. to finish it. The project took 12 years to complete. By the time it was finished in 1889, it had four volumes. It contained a total of 3,125 pages of information.

Besides music, Grove was a very serious scholar of the Bible. He spent much of his free time studying its history. He helped create a complete index of every proper name in the Bible. He also wrote over a thousand pages for a large Bible dictionary. Grove even helped start the Palestine Exploration Fund to study the Holy Land. He was also the first director of the Royal College of Music. He led the school from 1883 until he retired in 1894.
