He is best known for a large set of orchestral pieces called The Planets. This work brought him great international success after the First World War. Holst was a shy man who did not always enjoy being famous. He preferred to spend his time teaching or writing new music in peace. His unique style of music helped many younger English composers find their own ways. Even when his popularity changed, his influence on music stayed strong.

His great-grandfather, Matthias Holst, was a composer and harp teacher in Russia. His father, Adolph, was an organist and a teacher in Cheltenham. Holst grew up learning to play the piano and the violin. He later picked up the trombone at age twelve to help with his asthma. Because of a nerve problem in his right arm, he could not be a professional pianist. Instead, he played the trombone in theaters and at seaside resorts to earn money.

He went to the Royal College of Music in London in 1893. At first, he did not have a scholarship and had to be very careful with his money. He even became a vegetarian to save costs while studying. He studied many different things like piano, organ, and trombone. His main teacher for composing was Charles Villiers Stanford. Holst learned to be very critical of his own work to make it better.

He became lifelong friends with another composer named Ralph Vaughan Williams. The two friends often played their new music for each other to get advice. Holst was also inspired by the music of Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss. He even looked to old English music for ideas on how to write. He loved the idea of togetherness and joined a group called the Socialist League. This helped him feel a sense of friendship with other people.

He was the musical director at Morley College for many years. He also taught music to girls at St Paul's Girls' School. Holst started Whitsun music festivals to help people enjoy music together. His music was sometimes called austere, which means it could feel very plain or serious. However, people began to listen to his recordings again in the 1980s. Today, we remember him as a man who shaped the sound of English music.
