General anaesthesia

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

General anaesthesia is a way doctors make a person lose consciousness. This means the person is so deeply asleep that they cannot be woken up. Even if something painful happens, the patient will not react. This is very important during surgery. Without it, the pain would be much too much to bear. It is also used in emergency rooms to help people breathe.

It helps doctors keep a patient's airway clear and safe.

There are several goals for a good anaesthetic. First, it provides hypnosis, which is a total loss of awareness. Second, it offers analgesia to stop the feeling of pain. Third, it causes amnesia so the patient does not remember the procedure. It also helps with immobility and paralysis. This keeps the muscles very relaxed and still. This makes it much easier for the surgeon to do their work.

People have tried to find ways to dull pain for a long time. Ancient writings from the Egyptians and Greeks show early attempts. During the Middle Ages, scholars in Europe and the East made progress. For a long time, surgery was a very scary last resort. Many people chose death because the pain was so bad. In 1804, a Japanese surgeon named Hanaoka Seishū performed successful surgery with anaesthesia. Later, new ideas about germs helped make surgery much safer for everyone.

Today, an anaesthetist carefully plans every step for a patient. They check many things like age, weight, and medical history. They even look at how well a person can open their mouth. This is often done using the Mallampati score. They may also give premedication to help the patient feel calm. Some medicines, like Midazolam, help reduce anxiety before the operation starts. Other options include music therapy or even video games to distract children.

Scientists are still studying exactly how these drugs work in the brain. They know the drugs affect the central nervous system. This system includes parts like the spinal cord and the cerebral cortex. Some drugs might target specific proteins in the brain cells. A study from 2020 showed that inhaled drugs might affect the cell membrane. This can change how signals move through the brain. Understanding this helps doctors keep patients safe during every procedure.
