A local anesthetic is a special type of medicine. It stops all feeling, including pain, in one specific part of the body. This is different from general anesthesia. General anesthesia makes a person lose consciousness and sleep.

With local anesthesia, the person stays awake. Doctors use these medicines to help during or after surgery. Sometimes, they use them on nerve pathways to stop muscles from moving too. This is called a nerve block. It helps make medical procedures much easier for patients.

There are many ways doctors can give this medicine. They might use topical anesthesia. This means they put a cream, gel, or spray on the surface of the skin. This helps the medicine soak in deeper.

Other times, they use an injection to reach nerves. This can happen through an epidural or a spinal block. Doctors even use it for diagnostic tests. For example, it makes a bone marrow aspiration less painful. It can also be used when putting in devices like pacemakers.

These medicines have a long history. Many names for these drugs end in the letters "-caine." This suffix comes from the word cocaine. In the past, cocaine was used as a local anesthetic.

Today, scientists make synthetic versions. These new versions are much safer. They do not cause the same problems as cocaine did. They also have a much lower potential for abuse. This makes them better for modern medical use.

Doctors choose different drugs based on how long they need the medicine to work. Some drugs have a short duration of action. Examples include benzocaine and procaine. Other drugs have a medium duration. Lidocaine and prilocaine are in this group. Some drugs are very strong and last a long time. Tetracaine and bupivacaine are examples of these high-potency drugs.

Dentists use them for fillings or root canals. Surgeons use them for eye or heart surgery.

Most people handle these medicines very well. However, there can be some side effects. The skin might look white at the site. This happens because the blood flow slows down. This is called vasoconstriction. Sometimes, the area might swell up.

In rare cases, a person might feel dizzy or have a metallic taste in their mouth. If a person is very nervous, they might feel light-headed. This is often just an emotional reaction to the procedure. Most side effects go away quickly as the medicine wears off.
