Autry's professional journey began with a job as a telegrapher for the St. Louis–San Francisco Railway. While working midnight shifts in Chelsea, Oklahoma, he sang and played guitar to pass the time. This musical habit eventually led to his dismissal from the railway, but it opened a new door. After being encouraged by humorist Will Rogers, Autry traveled to New York to audition for the Victor Talking Machine Company. Although he was initially turned down, he followed advice to gain experience on the radio. He began singing on Tulsa radio station KVOO as "Oklahoma's Yodeling Cowboy" before signing with Columbia Records in 1929.

Autry's recording career was defined by massive commercial success and immense variety. He made a total of 640 recordings throughout his life. Of these, more than 300 songs were written or co-written by Autry himself. His records sold more than 100 million copies to listeners worldwide. He achieved several gold and platinum records, including the very first record ever to be certified gold. While he recorded many styles, including "hillbilly" music and labor songs, he is most famous for his crooning style. He also became a staple of holiday music with hits like "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and "Frosty the Snowman."

In the film industry, Autry rose to become one of the most significant stars of the Western genre. He was discovered by producer Nat Levine in 1934 and made his film debut in *In Old Santa Fe*. Between 1934 and 1953, Autry appeared in 93 motion pictures. Many of these were low-budget Westerns where he starred alongside his sidekick, Smiley Burnette, and his Morgan horse, Champion. By 1940, Autry was the biggest star at Republic Pictures. He held the first place spot in the *Motion Picture Herald* Top Ten Money-Making Western Stars poll from 1937 to 1942.

Autry's career also expanded into the new medium of television and large-scale business ownership. He hosted *The Gene Autry Show* from 1950 to 1956. Beyond entertainment, he was a successful entrepreneur who owned several radio stations in Southern California. He also owned a television station in the same region. Most notably, he was the founding owner of the California Angels Major League Baseball franchise. He held this ownership position from 1961 until 1997.

His impact on the American landscape is visible through various landmarks and honors. A town in Oklahoma was named Gene Autry in his honor, as was a precinct in Mesa, Arizona. He owned the 110-acre Monogram Ranch in California, which he renamed Melody Ranch. Although a brushfire destroyed many sets in 1962, the property continued to serve as a famous movie ranch. Autry also founded the Museum of Western Heritage, which is now known as the Autry Museum of the American West. He is a member of both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Autry's legacy is unique because of his ability to connect with different generations and values. He created the "Cowboy Code," a set of ten commandments designed to promote ethical and patriotic behavior among youth. This code appealed to organizations like the Boy Scouts. He also holds a singular distinction on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He is the only person to be awarded stars in all five original categories: film, television, music, radio, and live performance.
