They lived in a place called Gaul. This land is now parts of France and other countries. The Gauls lived in many tribes. These tribes were not under one single ruler. They built large towns with walls called oppida.

They even made their own coins. The Gauls followed a religion led by druids.

Gaul was a very powerful place. In the 4th century BC, they moved into Italy. They also moved toward the Balkans. Some Gauls moved even further to a place called Anatolia. These people became known as Galatians.

Later, the Romans began to fight the Gauls. Julius Caesar led the Gallic Wars. He wanted gold to pay his debts. The Gauls had a leader named Vercingetorix. He tried to unite the tribes to fight. But the Romans won the wars. After that, a new Gallo-Roman culture began. This was a mix of both ways of life.
