It covered parts of modern France, Belgium, and many other places. Many different groups lived there. They shared a way of life called the La Tène culture.

This culture spread far across the land.

In the past, Rome wanted to rule Gaul. In 58 BC, a leader named Julius Caesar led his army there. He fought many wars to win control. Some Gallic groups tried to fight back. A leader named Vercingetorix tried to unite the tribes. He was caught at the Battle of Alesia in 52 BC. This ended most of the fighting.

The wars were very hard on the people. Many people died or were taken as slaves.

After the wars, Gaul became part of Rome. The people began to mix their ways with Roman ways. This made a new Gallo-Roman culture. They lived this way for hundreds of years.
