Galactic plane

space Maturity 9-11 Next article →

A galaxy can look like a flat disk. Most of its mass sits on this disk. We call this flat part the galactic plane.

It is a very important part of a galaxy. The plane holds most of the stars and matter. Some galaxies are irregular. These do not have a clear disk shape. Even in a spiral galaxy, the plane is not perfect. The stars do not sit in a perfectly flat line.

You can find the poles of a galaxy too. These poles point up and down from the plane. They are called the galactic poles. Imagine a spinning disk with a stick through the middle. The stick points to the poles. The flat part of the disk is the plane.

Most people use these names for our own Milky Way. We live inside this galaxy's plane. This helps us map the stars around us.

Scientists worked to define these locations in 1959. The IAU set the position of the north galactic pole. They used a system called the B1950 epoch. Later, they used a new system called J2000. This new system accounts for something called precession. Precession is a slow change in how things point.

These rules help every scientist agree on where things are. They make sure everyone uses the same map. It is a big job to map the whole sky.

The north galactic pole is in the Coma Berenices area. It sits near a bright star named Arcturus. The south galactic pole is in the Sculptor constellation.

In the J2000 system, the north pole has specific coordinates. The zero point of longitude was also set in 1959. This point is at a position angle of 122.932 degrees. The Galactic Center is at a position angle of 31.40 degrees. These numbers help us find our way through space.

Knowing the galactic plane helps us understand our place. It is like knowing which floor of a building you are on.

We can use these coordinates to find other things. Some planets live far outside our galactic plane. We can also look for the Zone of Avoidance. These tools make the huge galaxy feel a bit smaller. They turn the sky into a map we can read.
