Galactic plane

space Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The galactic plane is a fundamental concept in astronomy. It describes the flat surface where most mass in a disk-shaped galaxy resides.

Most of a galaxy's stars and matter are concentrated along this plane. This structure is vital for understanding how galaxies are organized. While many galaxies have a clear disk, some are irregular. These irregular galaxies do not possess a well-defined disk shape. Even in a barred spiral galaxy like our Milky Way, the plane is slightly imprecise. The stars do not sit in a perfectly flat, coplanar arrangement.

To understand the orientation of a galaxy, we look at its poles. The galactic poles are the directions that point perpendicular to the galactic plane. Think of a spinning disk with an axis running through its center. The ends of that axis represent the poles. In common scientific usage, these terms usually refer to the Milky Way. Because Planet Earth is located within the Milky Way, we use these specific directions to map our sky.

Astronomers use specific coordinate systems to define these locations. In 1959, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) established formal definitions for our galaxy. They defined the position of the north galactic pole using the B1950 epoch. This was a specific time-based coordinate system used at the time. Later, scientists moved to the J2000 epoch for their calculations. This newer system accounts for precession. Precession is a slow change in the orientation of a rotating object.

Defining these points allows scientists to locate objects in deep space. The north galactic pole is located in the constellation Coma Berenices. It sits near the bright star known as Arcturus. In the J2000 epoch, the north pole has specific Right Ascension and Declination coordinates. The south galactic pole is located in the constellation Sculptor. These fixed points act like landmarks in a vast, dark ocean.

Mapping the galaxy also requires a starting point for longitude. The IAU defined the zero of longitude for galactic coordinates in 1959. This zero point is located at a position angle of 123 degrees from the north celestial pole in the B1950 epoch. In the current J2000 system, this position angle is 122.932 degrees. This coordinate helps astronomers determine where objects sit along the galactic equator. Knowing the exact longitude helps create a precise map of the entire disk.

Finding the heart of our galaxy is another key task. The Galactic Center is a specific point of interest within this system. It is located at a position angle of 31.72 degrees east of north in the B1950 epoch. In the J2000 epoch, this angle is 31.40 degrees. These precise measurements allow researchers to pinpoint the center of the Milky Way's mass. This center is a crucial part of the overall galactic structure.

Understanding the galactic plane connects to many other astronomical studies. It helps scientists identify objects that exist far away from the disk. For example, some exoplanets are found outside the galactic plane. Researchers also study the Zone of Avoidance, which relates to how the plane affects our view. The study of the galactic plane is a building block for broader galactic science. It helps us understand the movement and shape of the universe.
