Diocles was a famous chariot driver in Rome.

He raced for twenty-four years. He drove chariots pulled by four horses. These were called quadrigae. He raced for three different teams. These teams were known by colors. He started with the Whites. Later, he raced for the Greens. Finally, he raced for the Reds.

Diocles was a very skilled driver. He won 1,462 team races. He also won 1,064 single races. In single races, drivers competed for themselves. He won the most important race 110 times. He had two ways to win. He could lead from the start. He could also wait until the end to pull ahead.

He earned a lot of money. His total winnings were 35,863,120 sesterces. This was a huge amount of money. Some say he was the highest paid athlete ever.

Diocles was a hero to many people. However, his job was seen as low class. In Rome, drivers were often called infamous. This meant they did not have full rights. They could not hold public office. Still, his skill and wins made him a legend.
