Al started throwing when he was fifteen years old. A discus landed at his feet one day. He threw it back past a large crowd. Later, he went to the University of Kansas. He won many big titles there.

Al was very tough. In 1964, he had a bad neck injury. He also hurt his ribs. He competed while in great pain. He still won his third gold medal. In 1968, he won his fourth gold medal. He set a new record with that throw.

After sports, Al became an artist. He made abstract art. He used a discus to make his paintings. He would fling the disc into wet paint. This made splashing lines on a canvas. He even started a group for artist Olympians.
