He beat the old record by almost two feet. The jump was so big that it shocked him. He fell to his knees from the surprise. People even made a new word for his skill. They called it "Beamonesque." This word describes a feat that is much better than others. His record stood for 23 years. It was finally broken in 1991 by Mike Powell. Beamon's jump is still the Olympic record today. He is in the National Track and Field Hall of Fame. He also worked to help young athletes. He even played music on a jazz recording in 2024.
