She was one of the best long jumpers ever. In the long jump, a person runs and leaps far. Heike won two Olympic gold medals for this. She won them in 1992 and 2000. She also jumped 7.63 metres in 1992. This is the furthest a woman has ever jumped.

Heike was also a very fast runner. She competed in the 100 metre and 200 metre sprints. In 1986, she tied a world record for the 200 metre race. She ran it in 21.71 seconds. This was even done against a strong head wind.

She had a great rival named Jackie Joyner-Kersee. The two women were also very good friends. Heike was coached by her father-in-law, Erich Drechsler. Early in her life, she lived in East Germany. There were many claims about athletes using drugs back then. Heike never failed a drug test in her career. She continued to win many titles after Germany became one country. She remains a very successful name in track and field.
