Pace started competing when he was only 16 years old. He was the youngest on the U.S. team then. He won many national titles from 1973 to 1976. He also won world titles in 1975 and 1979. Pace was great at breaking world records. A world record is the best score ever made. In 1975, he was the first person to score 1300 points. His high score in 1979 stood for 10 years. He held the top world record for 14 years.

In 1980, he could not go to the Olympics in Moscow. The U.S. chose to boycott the games. A boycott means a group stays away from an event. He received a Congressional Gold Medal instead. A park in Ohio is named for him. It is called Darrell O. Pace Park.
