He is recognized as a pop icon within the modern entertainment industry. His career spans music, film, television, and voice acting. He has achieved massive commercial success as a solo artist. Gackt has sold more than 10 million records to his fans. He also holds a significant record in Japanese music history. He is the male soloist with the most consecutive top ten singles. This achievement highlights his consistent popularity and skill over many years.

Gackt's musical foundation began with a deep study of classical music. He was born on July 4, 1973, in Okinawa to a Ryukyuan family.

His father was a music teacher who played the trumpet. Gackt began his formal classical piano education at the age of three. He moved frequently between cities like Yamaguchi, Fukuoka, Shiga, Osaka, and Kyoto. These moves caused him to change piano instructors many times. This made his studies difficult during his elementary school years. However, a loss in a middle school piano competition motivated him to return to his studies. He eventually began writing orchestral scores. He credits the composer Frédéric Chopin as the foundation of his musical philosophy.

His professional career moved through several distinct musical phases. In 1993, he performed with the independent band Cains:Feel. He served as the frontman for this group. In 1995, he joined the visual kei rock band Malice Mizer. Visual kei is a style of Japanese rock characterized by striking visual presentations. As the vocalist and pianist for Malice Mizer, he helped the band achieve great fame. He contributed songs such as "Regret," "Hamon," and "Le Ciel." He left the band in January 1999 to begin his solo career. This transition led to the release of his debut mini-album, Mizérable, in 1999.

As a solo artist, Gackt developed complex, story-driven musical projects. He often uses concept albums to tell large, fictional narratives. One major project is the "Requiem et Reminiscence" series. This concept was explored in his 2001 album, Rebirth, which focused on a story set during World War II. Another significant project is the "Moon Saga." This saga includes the albums Moon and Crescent. These albums are part of a larger story that includes films and novels. Gackt often performs these stories during uniquely elaborate live concerts. These shows allow him to bring his conceptual worlds to life for his audience.

Gackt's versatility extends into many different areas of media. He is a successful actor in both film and television. He played Uesugi Kenshin in the NHK drama Fūrin Kazan.

He also wrote and acted in the film Moon Child. His voice is frequently heard in video games and anime. For example, his music appeared in the game Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII. He also provided voice acting for characters in games like Bujingai. Interestingly, he provided the voice samples for Gackpoid, which is a Vocaloid digital singer. This shows how his voice can exist in both human and digital forms.

Throughout his career, Gackt has participated in various musical groups and collaborations. In 2007, he became a founding member of the visual kei supergroup S.K.I.N. He later formed his own band project called Yellow Fried Chickenz in 2010.

His single "Returner (Yami no Shūen)" reached number one on the Oricon charts in 2007. This remains his only single to reach that top position. He has released nine studio albums and forty-eight singles in total. His ability to move between rock, classical, and pop styles defines his professional identity. He continues to be a major figure in international music festivals.

Gackt's work connects music to literature, film, and digital technology. By writing novels and directing plays, he merges different art forms into single experiences. His "Moon Saga" is a prime example of this multidisciplinary approach. He uses music to provide what he describes as courage and meaning. His career demonstrates how a classical education can evolve into a modern pop career. He bridges the gap between traditional Japanese elements and global rock culture. This makes his work significant to both Japanese and international audiences.
