He held this office from 2022 until March 2026. Boric is a socialist leader who rose to fame through student activism. He eventually became the youngest person ever to serve as president in Chile. His journey from a student leader to a head of state shows how political influence can grow over time. His career is defined by his involvement in social movements and constitutional changes.

Boric’s family history is connected to the migration of people from Europe to South America. His ancestors came from Ugljan, an island near the Adriatic coast of Croatia. His great-grandfather, Juan Boric, arrived in Punta Arenas around 1885. He was one of the first ten Croats to settle in the Magallanes region. The family originally moved to the area during the Tierra del Fuego gold rush.

Boric was born in 1986 in Punta Arenas to a chemical engineer and a mother of Catalan descent.

Before entering national politics, Boric focused on student rights at the University of Chile. He studied law but did not pursue a career as a lawyer. Instead, he became a leader in student politics during his university years. In 2011, he ran for the presidency of the University of Chile Student Federation, also known as FECh. He won the election with 30.52% of the votes. During this time, he acted as a spokesperson for students during large protests. This role helped him gain national recognition as a young leader.

In 2013, Boric transitioned from student activism to official government roles. He ran as an independent for the Chamber of Deputies, which is a group of elected officials who make laws. He represented the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctic region. Boric won 15,418 votes, which was the highest number for any candidate in that region. He served two consecutive terms in the Chamber from 2014 to 2022. During his first term, he worked on commissions for human rights and indigenous peoples.

Boric helped build new political groups to organize his ideas. He was part of the Autonomist Movement, which sought to create a new leftist coalition. This effort eventually led to the creation of the Chilean Broad Front in 2017. In 2018, he also co-founded the Social Convergence party. These groups allowed him to work with other politicians to influence national debates. His work helped make the Broad Front the third largest political force in Chile.

In 2019, Chile experienced a period of major civil unrest known as the "Social Outburst." Protests began over transport tariffs but grew to include demands about inequality and the cost of living. Boric was a vocal critic of the government's use of the military to handle the unrest. He also helped broker an agreement for a constitutional referendum. This referendum allowed citizens to vote on writing a new Constitution for the country.

Boric reached the presidency after a significant election in December 2021. He ran against José Antonio Kast in a second round of voting. Boric won with 55.9% of the total vote. As president, he represented Chile on the global stage. He met with many world leaders, including Joe Biden and Justin Trudeau.

He also used his platform to condemn the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.

While his presidency included many major decisions, it also faced significant challenges. Boric dealt with low approval ratings during his time in office. These low ratings were largely caused by high inflation and rising crime rates in the country. Despite these difficulties, his tenure marked a major shift in Chilean political history. He left his role as president in March 2026. His life reflects the changing political landscape of modern Chile.
