These lakes formed in a very interesting way. Long ago, Mount Fuji had volcanic eruptions. Lava flowed down the mountain and spread across the land. This lava blocked the paths of rivers. The blocked water had nowhere to go, so it formed lakes.

Today, the lakes are great spots for fishing and sightseeing. Some lakes even stay connected by water flowing underground.

Each lake has its own special features for visitors to see. Lake Kawaguchi is the most famous of the group. It is the only lake here that has an island. Many hotels and boat rides are found along its banks.

Lake Motosu is very deep, ranking ninth in all of Japan. Lake Shōji is the smallest of the five lakes. Lake Yamanaka is the largest and sits furthest to the east. It is also the third highest lake in the country.

There are many fun things to do in this region. Many people go to Fuji-Q Highland to ride roller coasters. One of these coasters is among the highest in the world. You can also hike or visit the Aokigahara Jukai Forest. Some people visit the Village of Healing to see a rebuilt Japanese village. The city of Fujiyoshida is also nearby. This city is very famous for its udon noodles.

Tourism is a huge part of life for the local people. Every year, about 9,000,000 sightseers visit the area. These visitors spend about 100,000,000,000 yen during their trips. People come to see the mountains and the water. They enjoy sailing on the lakes or relaxing in onsens. It is a place where nature and people meet in a special way.
