Freundlich equation

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Have you ever noticed how dust sticks to a table? In science, this is called adsorption. It happens when a gas or a liquid sticks to the surface of a solid. The Freundlich equation is a special rule that describes this. It shows the link between gas pressure and how much gas sticks to a solid. This rule also works for liquids. It can show how much of a liquid sticks to a solid surface.

This rule works by looking at how surfaces are built. Some surfaces are heterogeneous. This means the surface is not the same everywhere. It has many different spots for things to stick. When the pressure is low, the best spots fill up first. These are called high-energy sites. As the pressure goes up, the lower-energy sites start to fill. This makes the way things stick change as the pressure rises.

A scientist named Herbert Freundlich studied this long ago. He shared his work in 1909. He looked at how organic acids stuck to coal. He used coal as his solid material. His studies helped people understand how different spots on a surface work. Scientists still use his data today to check computer models.

Freundlich found specific numbers for different organic acids. For acetic acid, the K value was 2.606 and the n value was 2.35. For propionic acid, K was 3.463 and n was 2.82. For succinic acid, K was 4.426 and n was 3.65. These numbers help describe how each acid behaves. Scientists use these values to create lines on a graph. These lines show how the sticking changes with concentration.

Think of a surface like a parking lot with different spots. Some spots are easy to park in, while others are hard. The high-energy sites are like the easy spots. They fill up very quickly when there are only a few cars. When the lot gets crowded, cars have to take the harder spots. The Freundlich equation helps us predict this. However, the equation has a limit. It fails at very high pressure. This is because the solid eventually reaches saturation.
