Freundlich equation

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Sometimes, gas or liquids stick to the surface of a solid. This is called adsorption. In 1909, a man named Herbert Freundlich studied this. He created the Freundlich equation to show how it works.

This equation looks at the link between pressure and how much sticks. It can also look at how much of a liquid sticks. Freundlich used coal for his tests. He also studied organic acids. He found that the way things stick depends on the surface. Some surfaces are heterogeneous. This means the surface is not the same everywhere. It has many different spots.

When pressure is low, the best spots fill up first. These are high-energy sites. As pressure goes up, the weaker spots fill up. This makes the sticking change.

This rule works well at low pressure. But it has a limit. At very high pressure, the solid gets full. This is called saturation. After this, more pressure does not make more stick. The equation does not work well at that high point.
