Fresno acts as a major gateway for travelers. It sits at the junction of Highways 41 and 99. Highway 41 provides southern access to Yosemite National Park. Highway 168 serves as an entrance to the Sierra National Forest. Highway 180 leads to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. The city is also a short drive from the central coast and Monterey.

Long before the city was founded, the Yokuts and Miwok people lived in the San Joaquin Valley. These Native American groups engaged in trade with other tribes. They traded plant and animal products with coastal peoples like the Chumash. European exploration arrived later when Pedro Fages entered the valley in 1772. The name Fresno comes from the Spanish word for ash trees. These trees once lined the San Joaquin River in great numbers. In 1872, the Central Pacific Railroad established a station in the area. This station grew into the town of Fresno Station. The city officially became an incorporated city in 1885.

Agriculture and water management shaped the development of the region. In 1870, Moses Church created an irrigation system to help grow crops. He formed the Fresno Canal and Irrigation Company to manage these water ditches. This organization was a predecessor to the Fresno Irrigation District. The railroad helped the community grow quickly. Many residents moved to Fresno from Millerton to avoid flooding. The San Joaquin River had flooded Millerton in 1867. Later, the completion of the Friant Dam in 1944 caused Millerton to be covered by Millerton Lake. Today, ruins of the old county seat appear when the reservoir shrinks during droughts.

Fresno has been a site for many important American innovations. In 1937, the city opened the first modern landfill in the United States. This facility used new methods like trenching and compacting trash. It is now a National Historic Landmark. In 1958, the city was chosen to launch the BankAmericard. Bank of America picked Fresno because its remoteness limited potential damage if the project failed. This product became the world's first successful credit card. It allowed users to revolve a balance, which earlier products could not do. This company eventually became Visa Inc. in 1976.

The city also became a leader in educational innovation. Because it was far from large universities, local students needed new options. In 1910, Fresno High School offered college-level coursework to local graduates.

This program evolved into Fresno City College. It is the oldest community college in California. The city's teachers' college also helped evolve state colleges into the California State University system. This includes Fresno State. Urban development changed the landscape after World War II. Many orchards and row crops were replaced by housing and business corridors.

Visitors can find many different types of recreation in the region. Woodward Park features the Shinzen Japanese Gardens and many trails.

Despite these attractions, the city has faced challenges with its park system. A 2023 report noted that Fresno has a low percentage of land used for parks compared to other large cities.
