They lived in lodges along the Kern River delta. These people hunted deer, bear, fish, and tule elk. In 1776, the Spanish missionary Francisco Garcés explored the region.

He recorded his arrival at a Yokuts village northeast of the current city. Because of the remote location, the Yokuts remained isolated for a long time. They stayed largely separated from others until after the Mexican War of Independence. This period saw Mexican settlers begin to migrate to the area.

Settlers arrived in large numbers following the 1848 California gold rush. Gold was found along the Kern River in 1851. Later, oil was discovered in the valley in 1865. The area was once a marshland covered in tule reeds. Early pioneers called the place Kern Island. They built log cabins there in 1860. The city is named after Thomas Baker. He was a lawyer and a former militia colonel from Ohio.

He moved to the banks of the Kern River in 1863. His settlement, known as Baker's Field, became a stopover for travelers.

Bakersfield has experienced many changes in its governance and growth. The city was officially incorporated in 1873. It replaced Havilah as the county seat in 1874. However, the city voted to disincorporate in 1876. This happened because of issues with tax collection and a controversial city marshal. A citizen's council managed the community for 22 years. The city finally reincorporated on January 11, 1898.

Transportation also changed significantly over time. Residents raised $3,500,000 to fund the San Francisco and San Joaquin Valley Railroad. This "People's Railroad" arrived in 1895. It provided competition for the Southern Pacific Railroad.

Natural events have also shaped the history of the city. The Kern River used to occupy the current downtown area. This caused periodic flooding in the early days. In 1952, a massive earthquake struck the region. It measured 7.5 on the moment magnitude scale. The quake was felt from San Francisco to the Mexican border. It destroyed nearby towns like Tehachapi and Arvin.
