Frank Popper was a significant historian of art and technology. He was born in Prague in 1918. Later, he lived and worked in France and Britain. He served as Professor Emeritus of Aesthetics and the Science of Art at the University of Paris VIII. The French government honored him with the Légion d'honneur medal. Popper dedicated his career to documenting the relationship between technology and participatory art. He focused specifically on the period between the late 1960s and the early 1990s. His work helped define how we understand the intersection of science and creativity.

Popper's theories centered on the idea of an aesthetic-technological logic. This concept describes how artistic expression integrates with technical media. He believed that technology could be humanized through art. This process involves using machines to explore human needs and drives. By combining aesthetics with technology, artists can investigate the real and the virtual. Popper argued that this synthesis creates an unprecedented new art form. This form is not just a new medium for old ideas. Instead, it is a deep investigation into psychology and ecology.

One major area of his study was Kinetic Art. This art form uses movement to create its effects. Popper showed how Kinetic Art pioneered the use of optical movement. It also built links between science, technology, art, and the environment. His interest in movement grew after meeting the artist George Rickey in the early 1950s. He also encountered artists like Nicolas Schoffer and Frank Malina. These artists used scientific knowledge to create their works. Popper's understanding of these movements helped him trace the history of art through change and action.

Op Art, or optical art, was another vital influence on his thinking. This movement became powerful in the early 1960s. Op Art calls attention to how a person perceives things. It relies on the individual and changing perceptions of the spectator. Because of this, the spectator must transfer the creative act to themselves. This shift increases the participatory role of the audience. People do not just observe meaning; they help create it through physical changes to the work. This concept served as a predecessor to what Popper called Virtual Art.

Popper used the term "virtual art" to describe works made with technical media. This includes tools developed around or before the late 1980s. These technologies include human-machine interfaces like visualization casks and stereoscopic spectacles. Other tools include screens, three-dimensional sound generators, and data gloves. Some artists use data clothes, position sensors, and tactile feedback systems. These tools allow a person to immerse themselves in an image. This interaction creates a sense of reality through multiple senses. This intense experience is what Popper called immersive virtual reality, or VR.

Popper identified several types of contemporary new media art. He surveyed digital works that are materialized in the physical world. He also looked at multimedia offline works and interactive digital installations. Additionally, he studied multimedia online works, which are known as net art. He tracked the development of these forms from 1918 to 1983. This timeline includes art that uses light, movement, and electronics. By categorizing these works, he showed how digital art evolved from earlier technological art. He argued that contemporary virtual art is both a refinement and a departure from the past.

Popper's work connects to broader philosophical and social ideas. He viewed virtual art as a model for humanist values in a technological age. This connection is supported by the theories of Umberto Eco. Eco even considered the computer to be a spiritual tool. Popper's focus on art and technology is shared by thinkers like Jack Burnham and Gene Youngblood. They also observed how art has become virtualized. Through his books, such as *Origins and Development of Kinetic Art* and *From Technological to Virtual Art*, Popper provided a map for this new landscape. His legacy remains in the way we study the bond between humans and machines.
