Frank Calder was a very important leader in the world of ice hockey. He was born in Bristol, England, to parents from Scotland. As a young man, he moved to Canada to start a new life. He even flipped a coin to decide if he should move to Canada or the United States!

In Canada, he worked as a teacher and later became a sports editor. He wrote about many different games for newspapers like the Montreal Witness. He also helped run soccer groups in Montreal. Calder loved sports and spent his life helping them grow and succeed.

Calder played a huge part in how professional hockey works today. In 1917, the owners of a league called the NHA wanted to remove one team owner. They decided to start a brand new league instead. This new group was called the National Hockey League, or the NHL.

Calder was chosen to be the very first president of the NHL. He held this important job from 1917 until he passed away in 1943. He helped the league grow from Canada into the United States. He also worked hard to make sure the NHL stayed the top hockey league in North America.

As president, Calder had a lot of power to make big decisions. In 1925, he had to deal with a strike by the Hamilton Tigers players. Instead of talking to them, he suspended the players and gave them fines.

He also dealt with rival leagues like the American Hockey Association. When a man named Eddie Livingstone tried to compete, Calder took strong action. He even helped a new owner take over the Detroit Cougars. This team later became the famous Detroit Red Wings. Calder was a leader who was not afraid to make tough choices for his league.

Calder also believed that hockey should be open to everyone. He was very firm that the NHL would not stop Black players from playing.

In 1927, he heard about an all-Black team called the Boston Black Panthers. He said that professional hockey would not draw a line to keep people out. He also worked to make sure professional teams and amateur teams got along. He worked with W. G. Hardy to make sure everyone used the same playing rules. This helped players move safely between different levels of hockey.

Today, many people remember Frank Calder through special trophies. He wanted to honor the best new players in the league.

He helped create a trophy for top rookies, which is now the Calder Memorial Trophy. There is also a big championship trophy called the Calder Cup in the AHL. Calder was put into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1947. He was also honored in Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 2015. His long life helped shape the game of hockey into what we see today.
