Francisco Varela was a scientist from Chile. He studied many things. He was a biologist, a philosopher, and a neuroscientist. A neuroscientist is someone who studies how the brain works.

He had a big idea with his mentor, Humberto Maturana. They spoke about autopoiesis. This is a way to describe how living things make themselves. This idea helped people understand biology in a new way.

Varela also studied how the mind works. He believed in embodied cognition. This means our minds and our bodies work together with the world. We do not just think with our brains alone.

He was interested in peace and meditation. He helped start the Mind and Life Institute. This group helps scientists talk with Buddhist leaders. They study how science and meditation can work together.

Varela lived in Chile, the United States, and France. He taught at many schools. He wrote many books and articles. He wanted to bring different ideas together. He died in Paris in 2001.
