Francis was born in 1584. He went to school at Oxford. Later, he studied to be a lawyer in London. However, he soon found his true passion. He loved to write plays and poems. He studied under a famous poet named Ben Jonson.

Francis is best known for working with John Fletcher. The two men were very close friends. They even lived in the same house. They worked together to make new kinds of stories. One of their best plays was called Philaster. It was a big hit at the Globe Theatre. This play helped start a new style called tragicomedy.

Not every play was a success. An early play by Francis was called The Knight of the Burning Pestle. The audience did not quite understand it. They thought it was just an old style of play. They missed the funny jokes Francis was making.

Francis had two daughters named Elizabeth and Frances. In 1613, he had a stroke. He could not write plays after that. He died in 1616. He was buried in Westminster Abbey.
