He was born in 1694 near Versailles. He spent much of his life working for King Louis XV. The king even called Quesnay his thinker. This was a very high honor. Quesnay lived in the Palace of Versailles for many years. He spent his time studying how the world works. He did not get involved in the many fights at the royal court. Instead, he focused on science and ideas.

Quesnay is most famous for his work on the economy. In 1758, he published a book called the Tableau économique. This is known as the Economic Table. It was one of the first books to study the economy using math and formulas. He wanted to show how wealth moves through a country. Quesnay believed that agriculture was the only true source of wealth. He thought farming created the extra goods that a nation needs. He divided people into three groups. He called landowners the proprietary class. He called farmers the productive class. He called merchants the sterile class.

His ideas helped start a group called the Physiocrats. These people were also called the Économistes. They believed that nature should guide how a country works. Quesnay thought that taxes on farmers were very bad. He said these taxes made farmers want to grow less food. He believed that taxes should instead be paid by landowners. This would keep the farms strong and productive. His ideas were not always popular with the wealthy people in France. Some of his followers included men like Mirabeau and Nicolas Baudeau. Even the famous Adam Smith met Quesnay in Paris. Smith praised Quesnay in his famous book, The Wealth of Nations.

Quesnay also spent a lot of time studying China. In 1767, he wrote a book called Le Despotisme de la Chine. This book described Chinese politics and society. He really admired the way China used scholars to lead the people. He liked that they did not rely on a large group of nobles. Because he loved Chinese ideas so much, people called him the "Confucius of Europe." He even encouraged the son of King Louis XV to follow Chinese traditions. He wanted the government to show how important farming was to the land.

Quesnay's life was full of many different roles. He started as an apprentice to a surgeon when he was sixteen. Later, he became a master-surgeon in Mantes. He eventually became the first consulting physician to the king. He lived a long life and saw his student, Turgot, become a leader. Quesnay died on 16 December 1774. His work changed how people think about money and land. Today, we still study his ideas about how wealth flows. He helped turn economics into a real science.
