The magazine operates by organizing vast amounts of data into ranked lists. These lists help readers identify successful companies and leaders. One major way it does this is by ranking companies by their revenue. Revenue is the total amount of money a company earns. Since 1955, Fortune has published the Fortune 500 list every year. It also produces the Fortune Global 500 list. Other rankings include the 100 Best Companies to Work For and the 40 Under 40 list. These tools turn complex economic information into clear, comparative data.

Fortune has many different types of specialized rankings. Some lists focus on human resources, like the Best Companies to Work For. Others focus on specific regions, such as the Fortune India 500 or the Fortune China 500. There are also lists for specific groups of people. These include the Most Powerful Women, the 40 Under 40, and the 50 Greatest Leaders. Even new industries are covered, such as the Crypto 40 list. These various categories allow the magazine to cover many different parts of the business world.

The history of Fortune began with Henry Luce. He was a co-founder of Time magazine. Luce founded Fortune in 1929. He originally wanted to name the publication "Power." His business partner, Briton Hadden, did not support this idea. Hadden died suddenly on February 27, 1929. Because of this, Luce moved forward with the new name. The magazine made its official debut in February 1930. This was during the onset of the Great Depression. Luce noted in a memo that the business slump might last an entire year.

In its early years, Fortune was a very high-quality product. It was an oversized magazine measuring 11 by 14 inches. It used heavy, creamy paper and full color throughout. The first issue cost $1 per copy. There were 30,000 subscribers for that initial 184-page issue. By 1937, the magazine had 460,000 subscribers. It also earned an annual profit of half a million dollars. The magazine also became known for its excellent photography. Walker Evans served as the photography editor from 1945 to 1965. Famous photographers like Ansel Adams also contributed work.

The magazine has changed its publishing schedule many times. From 1930 to 1978, it was a monthly publication. In January 1978, it switched to a biweekly schedule. In October 2009, it began publishing every three weeks. This change happened because advertising revenue and circulation were declining. As of 2018, the magazine is published 14 times per year. In 1986, Marshall Loeb became managing editor. He expanded the magazine's focus. He added graphs, charts, and tables. He also included articles on social issues like homelessness and public schools.

Fortune has also experienced many changes in ownership. Between 1990 and 2014, Time Warner owned Time Inc. During this time, articles were hosted at CNNMoney.com. In 2014, Fortune launched its own website, Fortune.com. In 2017, Meredith Corporation announced it would acquire Time Inc. for $2.8 billion. This deal was finished in January 2018. Later, in November 2018, Meredith sold Fortune to Chatchaval Jiaravanon. He is a Thai billionaire from the Charoen Pokphand Group. The magazine is now part of a global media landscape that includes Fortune Indonesia. In July 2025, the magazine laid off 10 percent of its 360 full-time employees.
