It helps people understand how the world of money and work functions. The magazine focuses on long stories that look deeply into big topics. It competes with other well-known magazines like Forbes and Bloomberg Businessweek. One of its most important jobs is making ranked lists. These lists help people see which companies are the most successful. People all over the world read it to learn about global business.

This magazine works by using lists to organize a lot of information. It ranks companies by how much money they earn, which is called revenue. For example, it has published the Fortune 500 list every year since 1955. It also makes a list called the Fortune Global 500. Other lists include the 100 Best Companies to Work For and the 40 Under 40. These lists show who the most powerful leaders and fastest growing companies are. By using these rankings, the magazine turns big data into something easy to see.

Henry Luce founded the magazine in 1929. He wanted to record the way industrial civilization worked. His partner, Briton Hadden, did not think the idea was great at first. Luce actually wanted to call the magazine "Power." However, Hadden died suddenly in February 1929 before the magazine started. The first issue finally arrived in February 1930. It cost one dollar to buy a single copy. At that time, the magazine was very large and used heavy, creamy paper.

Many talented people helped make the magazine special over the years. In the 1945 to 1965 period, Walker Evans worked as the photography editor. Famous photographers like Ansel Adams also shared their work there. In the 1980s, Marshall Loeb became a managing editor. He added more charts and tables to help explain the economy. He also wrote about social issues like homelessness and public schools. The magazine has changed how often it is printed over time. It used to come out every month from 1930 until 1978.
