It is a funny and clever story. Many people call it a masterpiece of literature. It uses humor to look at society. The book focuses on middle-class life in the 1930s. It explores ideas like marriage and education. The story helps readers understand social changes in China. It is considered one of the best books of the twentieth century.

The story follows a man named Fang Hongjian. He travels back to China after studying in Europe. Fang had run out of money while abroad. He even bought a fake degree to show his family. On a boat, he meets a woman named Su Wenwan. He also meets a woman named Miss Pao. Later, Fang moves to Shanghai during a difficult time. He eventually marries a woman named Sun Roujia. Their marriage is very difficult and full of arguments. The book ends with Fang alone in an empty house.

A writer named Qian Zhongshu created this book. He began writing it in 1944. He finished the work in 1946. Qian lived in Shanghai during the Japanese occupation. His wife, Yang Jiang, helped inspire his writing. Qian used his own life experiences for the story. He had also studied abroad in the mid-1930s. He even traveled through rural China to teach. These real journeys helped shape the characters in the book.

The book was first published in Shanghai in 1947. New editions came out in 1948 and 1949. After the Communist Revolution, it was not printed in mainland China again until 1980. For a long time, it was also banned in Taiwan. This was because it poked fun at the Nationalist government. However, the book was translated into many languages starting in the 1960s. English versions came out in 1979. Russian and German versions followed in 1979 and 1982. Japanese was published in 1988.

This novel has a big impact on language. Some parts of the book became common sayings in China. For example, the name "Carleton University" is now an idiom. People use it to talk about fake degrees. The title also comes from a French proverb. It says marriage is like a fortress being attacked. People outside want to enter the fortress. People inside want to get out. The book connects different cultures together through its many references.
