A forklift is a powered industrial truck designed to lift and move materials over short distances.

Because of their ability to handle heavy loads, they are indispensable in manufacturing and warehousing. You might hear them called by many names, such as lift trucks, jitneys, hi-los, or fork trucks. These machines are a massive global industry. In 2013 alone, the top 20 manufacturers sold 944,405 machines. These sales reached a total value of $30.4 billion.

To understand how a forklift works, you must look at its mechanical design. The truck frame serves as the base for the entire machine. It holds the mast, axles, wheels, and the power source. At the rear, a heavy mass called a counterweight is attached to the frame. This mass balances the weight of the load being lifted in the front. In electric models, the large battery often acts as part of this counterweight.

The actual lifting is done by the mast, which is a vertical assembly. The mast uses interlocking rails to provide lateral stability. It is driven by hydraulic power, which means liquid is pushed through cylinders to create movement. The carriage, which holds the forks, moves up and down these rails. Tilt cylinders are also mounted to the frame and the mast. These cylinders allow the operator to pivot the mast forward or backward. This helps the driver engage a load or keep it steady on uneven ground.

Forklifts have a long history of evolution. In 1906, the Pennsylvania Railroad used battery-powered platform trucks for luggage. During World War I, labor shortages in the United Kingdom led to new material-handling tools. By 1917, Clark began using powered tractors in its United States factories. Yale & Towne Manufacturing entered the market in 1920. The late 1930s saw a major shift with the introduction of hydraulic power and standardized pallets.

Modern design focuses heavily on warehouse efficiency and safety. In 1954, Lansing Bagnall developed the first narrow-aisle electric-reach truck. This allowed warehouses to have narrower aisles and higher stacking, which increased storage space.

As lifting heights increased in the 1950s and 1960s, safety features became vital. Manufacturers added overhead guards, which are metal roofs that protect the operator. They also added load backrests to prevent items from shifting backward. In the 1990s, companies began meeting new emission standards to reduce exhaust fumes.

Operators can customize their machines using many different attachments. A sideshifter allows the forks to move laterally, so the truck does not have to reposition for every load. A fork positioner moves the tines together or apart for different sized items. Some machines use a roll clamp to squeeze and move barrels or paper rolls.

For specialized work, there are even man baskets with railings for hoisting workers safely. Other tools include carpet poles, drum handlers, and even snow ploughs.

Forklifts vary greatly in their power and capacity. Most warehouse forklifts lift between one and five tons. However, massive machines can lift up to 50 tons. These large models are used for heavy tasks like moving shipping containers.

Power comes from different sources. Internal combustion engines can run on diesel, gasoline, propane, or natural gas. Electric forklifts use batteries or fuel cells. Electric models are especially useful in indoor warehouses because they do not produce carbon monoxide.
