Forecasting

math Maturity 11-13 Next article →

How can we guess what happens next? We use forecasting. Forecasting is a way to make smart guesses. We look at facts from the past. We also look at facts from now. This helps us see what might happen later.

Some people use math to help them. They use numbers to find patterns. If the patterns stay the same, the guess might be right. This is called a quantitative method. Other people use their own ideas. This is called a qualitative method. This is useful when we do not have many numbers.

Forecasting helps in many ways. Shops use it to know how many toys to buy. This helps them avoid having too much extra stuff. It also helps them have enough for customers. We use it to guess the weather or floods. Some people even use it to guess how much money things will cost.

Forecasting is not a plan. A plan tells us what we should do. A forecast tells us what might happen. It is good to include how unsure we are. This helps people make better choices. We can always check our old guesses to see if they were right.
