Budget

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A budget is a plan for a set time. It is often for one month or one year. People use budgets to make big plans. They use them to set goals.

Many different groups use budgets. Families use them to track money. They look at what they earn and what they spend. They also think about savings and debts.

Companies use budgets to plan for work. They might plan for sales or for making new things. Some companies use a zero-based budget. This means they must justify every cost. They do not just carry over old costs from last year.

Governments also use budgets. A government budget shows expected money and spending. In the United States, the federal budget goes to Congress. In India, the Finance Minister leads the budget team. The first Indian budget was made in 1860.

Sometimes, spending is more than the money coming in. This is called a deficit. If you have more money than you spend, it is a surplus. A surplus lets you save for the future.
