La Folia is a very old musical theme.

Early Folia
Early Folia

It is one of the oldest pieces of music on record. People call it by many names. In France, it is called Folies d'Espagne. In Italy, it is called La Follia.

Later Folia

There are two main types of Folia. The early version is a fast dance. It may have started in the 1400s. It might come from Portugal or Spain. The later version is more famous. It uses a set pattern of chords. This pattern stays the same. A composer named Jean-Baptiste Lully helped make this version standard. It often starts and ends with the same slow melody. This acts like bookends for the music.

Many great musicians have used this theme. More than 150 composers have used it. Famous names include Handel, Bach, and Vivaldi. Even Beethoven used it in his Fifth Symphony.

The theme is still heard today. It can be found in folk music and even modern pop songs.
