They are different from the fins found on fish. Flippers belong to animals like whales, seals, and sea turtles.

Different animals use flippers in different ways. Whales and dolphins use them to steer and control their movement. They use their large tails, called flukes, to push forward.

Humpback whales have bumps on their flippers called tubercles. These bumps help the whale turn sharply in the water. Seals and sea lions use their flippers to turn.

Some animals have special bone structures in their flippers. Many whales have hyperphalangy. This means they have more finger bones than most mammals.

This helps make their limbs long and flat. Penguins are also unique. Their flippers are actually wings.

These wings are very heavy and dense. This helps them dive deep into the ocean. Even sea turtles use flippers to find food. A green turtle might use a flipper to hold a jellyfish.
