Flight management system

A flight management system, or FMS, is a very important computer for modern airplanes.

It automates many tasks while the plane is in the air. This helps the pilots by reducing their workload. In the past, planes needed extra crew members like flight engineers or navigators. Now, the FMS can handle those jobs instead. This makes flying much more efficient for large airlines.

This system works by following a specific flight plan.

First, the computer uses sensors to find exactly where the plane is. It uses tools like GPS and radio navigation to stay on track. The pilots talk to the computer using a control display unit, or CDU. This is a small screen with a keyboard or a touchscreen. The FMS then sends the path to the pilot's main screens. Most of the time, the path looks like a bright magenta line.

Modern FMS technology started appearing on the Boeing 767 aircraft.

Before that, there were earlier versions of navigation computers. Today, similar systems can be found on much smaller planes like the Cessna 182. The FMS relies on a navigation database to function. This database is a list of waypoints, airports, and runways. To keep everything safe, the database is updated every 28 days. This ensures the information is always current for the pilots.

To stay on course, the FMS uses many different sensors at once.

It uses GPS as a primary tool because it is very accurate. It also uses an inertial reference system, or IRS, to track movement. The IRS uses ring laser gyros and accelerometers to calculate position. Some systems even use a Kalman filter to combine all these different signals. This helps the computer find one single, highly accurate position. This accuracy is measured as the Actual Navigation Performance.

One of the smartest parts of an FMS is vertical navigation, or VNAV.

VNAV helps the plane find the best way to climb and descend. It looks at the plane's weight and fuel to save energy. By finding the best speed, called the ECON speed, the plane uses less fuel. It even calculates the top of descent point to start landing smoothly. This helps the plane fly in a way that is quiet and clean. It is like having a smart guide for every part of the journey.
