Long ago, many planes did not have roofs. Pilots had to wear heavy leather to stay warm. Some jackets used sheepskin or fur inside. This helped when the air felt very cold.

In the United States, the A-2 and G-1 are famous styles. The A-2 was first made in 1931. The G-1 is used by the Navy. These jackets became symbols of adventure. Later, the MA-1 jacket became very common. It is often sage green. It has a bright orange lining inside. This bright color helps people see it if there is an accident.

Today, many people wear these coats for fashion. They are often called bomber jackets.
