Flatworm

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Flatworms are soft animals with thin bodies.

Pseudoceros dimidiatus

They are shaped like leaves or ribbons. This shape is very important. Flatworms do not have lungs or a heart. Instead, they use diffusion to live. This is a way that oxygen and food move through their bodies. It happens because their bodies are so thin.

Most flatworms are predators that hunt for food. Some live in water. Others live in wet places like leaf litter. Some flatworms are parasites. These live inside other animals.

Tapeworms and flukes are two types of parasites. They have complex life cycles. They often move between different hosts to grow.

Flatworms have many cool parts. They have tiny eyes called ocelli. These eyes help them sense light. They also have cells to help them feel touch. Some flatworms, like planarians, can regrow their bodies. If a piece is cut off, a new worm grows. This happens because they have special stem cells. These cells can change into any other kind of cell the body needs.
