It is a bright red field with five golden stars. Many people in China call it the "Five-star Red Flag." The red color is used to represent the Chinese Communist Revolution. The stars are placed in a special way on the flag. One large star sits near the left side. Four smaller stars sit in an arc toward the right.

The design of the stars has a very deep meaning. The large star represents the Chinese Communist Party. The four smaller stars represent four different social classes. These groups are the working class and the peasantry. They also include the urban petite bourgeoisie and the national bourgeoisie. The way the stars are set shows unity. They all point toward the center of the large star. This shows the different groups working together under one leadership.

China has used many different flags throughout its long history. In 1862, the Qing dynasty used the Yellow Dragon Flag. That flag had an azure dragon on a yellow field. Later, in 1912, the Beiyang government used a Five-Colored Flag. That flag had five colored stripes for different ethnic groups. After that, a different flag with a blue section was used. Each flag showed how the country was changing at that time.

The current flag was designed by a man named Zeng Liansong. His design was approved by the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. The flag became the national flag on October 1, 1949.

On that day, the People's Liberation Army first raised it. They hoisted it on a pole at Tiananmen Square in Beijing. This happened during the ceremony to start the People's Republic of China. It was a very important moment for the whole nation.

There are many rules for how to treat the flag. It must be raised every day at Tiananmen Square. Schools also raise the flag during the week. When the flag is raised, it should move slowly. It must always reach the very top of the pole. If the flag is damaged or faded, it should not be used. People must show great respect to this symbol of their country.
