Fish traps are clever tools used to catch fish and other helpful aquatic animals.

People all over the world use them to find food. There are two main ways these traps work. Some are permanent structures that stay in a river or a tidal area. Others are small, portable tools called pot traps or bottle traps. These are often lifted out of the water after they have been sitting for a while.

Using traps is a tradition found in almost every culture on Earth.

Most portable traps work using a special shape called an inverted funnel.

This is an opening that gets much narrower as it goes inside the trap. A fish swims through the wide part to reach bait. Once inside, the fish cannot find its way back out through the tiny end. Some modern traps use a thick steel wire frame shaped like a heart.

Chicken wire is stretched around this frame to create a mesh. The mesh wraps around and then tapers into the inside of the trap. This design makes it very easy for fish to enter but hard to leave.

Humans have been building fish traps for thousands of years.

In South Africa, some stone walls used as traps are 3,000 years old. Even older systems exist at a place called Budj Bim. There, indigenous people built canals over 2 km long to catch eels.

These canals are part of a system that is at least 6,600 years old. This makes it older than the famous Pyramids of Giza. In Australia, the Brewarrina fish traps on the Barwon River also caught huge numbers of fish as water levels changed.

There are many different kinds of traps for different animals and places.

In Japan, heavy earthenware pots are used to catch octopuses. These octopuses enter the pot to find shelter and protection. Lobster pots often have two parts called a "kitchen" and a "parlour." The lobster enters the kitchen for bait and then moves into the parlour where it is caught.

In the Philippines, people use Bubu traps made of bamboo or rattan. These are shaped like boxes or domes to fit on coral reefs.

While traps are helpful, they can sometimes cause problems for the environment.

Lost traps can become marine debris that stays in the ocean. For example, fishers in Bristol Bay, Alaska, lost 31,600 crab traps in just two years. In the Chesapeake Bay, people lose or leave behind 12 to 20 percent of their crab traps every year. These lost traps can continue to catch animals by mistake. Some traps can even catch protected animals like the platypus in Australia. It is important to use traps that are safe for the water.
